Mr. Jay Beyer joined the Wilson Focus School Staff in
July of 2012. Prior to teaching 3rd
Grade, Mr. Beyer taught 4th Grade for ten years and a 4th/5th
Multi-Grade classroom for one year.
was born in Red Wing, MN and is the youngest of five children. Mr. Beyer grew up in Rapid City, SD nestled
at the base of the Black Hills. After a
ten-year battle with Leukemia, Jay lost his mother, Alice, when his was only
fifteen years old. Using his mother’s
death, Jay approaches his life as a survivor and not a victim. He attended elementary, junior high, and high
school in Rapid City. Mrs. Coleen
Marvin, was Jay’s third grade teacher.
She taught him that “learning to love yourself is the greatest love of
all.” Jay graduated from Rapid City
Central High School in June of 1996 in the top 5% of his graduating class.
Beyer graduated from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD in December of
2000. He earned his B.S. in Elementary
Education and minored in Early Childhood Education. Jay earned his M.A. in Mathematics from the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln specializing in Teaching, Learning, Teacher
Education, and Middle Level Mathematics in August of 2011.
teaching career began as the Educational Coordinator for the South Dakota
School of Mines & Technology’s Children’s Science Center in the spring of
2001 and also worked as a substitute teacher in the Rapid City Area School
District. Jay began teaching full time
at General Beadle Elementary in Rapid City in August of 2001.
Beyer taught fourth grade in Rapid City for five years, averaging 25 – 30
students each year. While teaching, he
worked as a tutor for Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, worked part
time at the Hampton Inn of Rapid City, and taught summer school literacy grades
Kindergarten through 5.
Beyer moved to Omaha in July 2006 to begin his employment with OPS at Wakonda
Elementary. In his 8 years with OPS, Mr.
Beyer has also taught summer school at Pinewood & Wakonda. He taught Spring Break School at Castelar Elementary
& Wakonda, as well.

condo by the Riverfront. Walking,
biking, and camping are a few ways Mr. Beyer spends his free time.
